Best Time to Go to Cancun: What 20 Years of Weather Data Says
March and April are the best time to go to Cancun, with 6 to 8 rainy days and up to 11.8 hours of sun a day. September is the one to skip, with 23 rainy days and 7.3 inches of rain.
The best time to go to Cancun is March and April. Those two months give you highs of 81.1°F (27.3°C) and 83.7°F (28.7°C), only 8 and 6 rainy days, and up to 11.8 hours of sun a day, all well outside hurricane season. December to February is almost as good, and May is a smart shoulder-season gamble. September and October are the months we would skip.
Temperature barely matters in Cancun, which surprises people. The average high only moves from 78.3°F in January to 86.9°F in August, so the real decision is about rain, storms and how much you want to pay for a hotel room. Everything below is built on 20-year averages (2006 to 2025), not a forecast for your dates.

Two seasons, not four
Cancun has a dry stretch and a wet stretch, and the wet one is long. From June through October the city averages between 17 and 23 rainy days a month, which adds up to roughly 100 rainy days across five months. September and October alone deliver 14.3 inches (363 mm) of rain, close to a third of the 48 inches that fall in a whole year.
From February to April the picture flips. March is the driest month on the chart at 1.3 inches (33 mm), April has the fewest rainy days at 6, and humidity sits around 72% to 74%, which is the lowest it gets. It is still a tropical coast, so you will sweat on a walk to the ruins, but you will not be wading through a storm drain on the way back.
December to February: the comfortable, busy months
This is when most North Americans arrive, and the weather explains why. Highs run 78°F to 80°F (25.7°C to 26.4°C), lows stay above 71°F (22°C), and February offers 10.3 hours of sun with 9 rainy days. You can swim, eat dinner outside in a T-shirt and sleep without much air conditioning pressure.
The catch is a bit more cloud and wind than you might expect. January has the lowest sunshine of the year at 9.1 hours, and cold fronts from the north, locally called nortes, can bring a grey, breezy day or two at this time of year. They pass quickly. If you are weighing individual weeks, our guide to Cancun weather in December goes into the holiday stretch in detail, and the Cancun weather in February page shows the daily detail.
Crowds are the real cost. The stretch from just before Christmas to the first days of January is the most expensive and most booked-out of the year, and mid-February to early March can be busy as well. If you want winter weather with fewer people, go in the first half of December or the last two weeks of January.
March and April: the best time to go to Cancun for most people
If we had to name one window, and one only, it would be the second half of March through April. The numbers line up: 81.1°F and 83.7°F highs, 8 and 6 rainy days, and 11.3 to 11.8 hours of sun. The sea has had months to warm up, the sky is reliably blue and you are weeks or months away from the first named storms.
Two things to know. First, March is spring-break month, so beaches and hotel zones are busier and louder, especially when US college holidays line up. Second, Easter week (Semana Santa) is a big domestic holiday in Mexico, and Mexican families fill the coast then. April outside Easter week is probably the quietest, best-weather combination you will find. Check the April page for Cancun if you want a closer look.
May: the shoulder-season bet
May is where things start to tip. The average high reaches 85.1°F (29.5°C), the sun is out for 11.9 hours a day (the most of any month), and humidity creeps up to 77%. Rain jumps to 13 days and 3.3 inches (84 mm), but a lot of that is short afternoon showers rather than lost days.
We like May for people who can be flexible. Hotels are generally easier to book than in March, and the wet season has not properly begun. The downsides are heat, a stronger chance of sticky nights and, in some years, seaweed on the beaches (more on that below). Pick a hotel with a pool and some shade and May works fine.
June to October: heat, rain and hurricane season
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and for Cancun the risk is concentrated from roughly August to October. Hurricanes Wilma in 2005 and Delta in 2020 both hit this coast in October, which is why we treat that month with respect even though a given year is usually fine.
Month by month, the numbers look like this:
- June: 19 rainy days and 7.2 inches (183 mm), the wettest of the early summer months. Humidity is 82% and it is already hot.
- July: a bit of a surprise. Rain falls to 4.2 inches (107 mm) over 17 rainy days, with 11.8 hours of sun. If you must travel in summer, July is the most reasonable choice, and families on school holidays often do. See the Cancun July weather page.
- August: hottest month at 86.9°F (30.5°C), 21 rainy days and 81% humidity. Manageable, but muggy.
- September: the worst month on the chart. 23 rainy days, 7.3 inches (185 mm) and 83% humidity. We would not book it unless the price is very good and the booking is refundable.
- October: 20 rainy days and 7 inches (178 mm). Storm risk is still real, even if the odds improve as the month goes on. Our October page has the details.
Summer is not a disaster. Most days still include sun, since the city averages 10.5 to 11.8 hours of sunshine from June to September. But if you are booking a honeymoon or a once-a-year beach week, you are buying a lottery ticket. Use travel insurance that covers named storms, and book flexible rates.

November: the quiet return
November is when the weather changes mood. Rain drops to 3.8 inches (97 mm) from 7 in October, the average high eases to 81°F (27.2°C) and humidity slides to 76%. It is still hurricane season on paper until November 30, but late-season storms are less common than in September or October.
We would call November a good value month. The heavy holiday crowds have not arrived, the beaches are calmer, and with 13 rainy days you will get some showers but also 10.1 hours of sun on average. Early November can still be wet, so aim for the second half if you can. The November page shows how it compares month to month.
Peak season versus shoulder season
Anyone asking for the best time to go to Cancun on a budget is really asking where the shoulder seasons sit, so here they are.
Peak season in Cancun is roughly mid-December to April, with spikes at Christmas and New Year, spring break in March and Easter. The shoulder seasons are May and November, with late April and early December sitting on the edge of both. Low season, from about June to October, is when hotels discount most, partly because of the rain and storms.
Prices follow that pattern, though we do not track them. As a general rule, a hotel in the same room can cost substantially more at Christmas than in November, so shifting your dates by even a few weeks matters. If your budget is tight, the sweet spot is late April, May or the second half of November.
How to choose by goal
The best time to go to Cancun depends on what you are trying to do there, so here is how we would split it.
- Best beach weather: March and April. Lowest rain, highest sun, calm skies.
- Cheapest trip: September and October are cheapest, but also the riskiest. For a balance, go in May or late November.
- Sightseeing at Chichen Itza, Tulum or Coba: December to March, when the humidity is 72% to 76% and the walking is easier. Go early in the morning in any month.
- Families with school-age kids: July, despite the rain and heat, because it lines up with school holidays. Otherwise Easter or Christmas, and book early.
- Avoiding crowds: early December, late January, May and late November.
- Snorkeling and swimming: the sea is warm enough all year, and visibility depends more on recent wind and rain than on the calendar.
A careful word about sargassum
Sargassum is the brown seaweed that has washed up on the Caribbean-facing beaches of the Mexican Caribbean in recent years. It tends to be worst in spring and summer and can vary a lot from year to year and beach to beach. Our weather data does not measure it, so we cannot give you a month or a number.
If it matters to you, check recent beach reports from the hotel zone or from local hotels a week before you travel, and ask a hotel how it clears the beach. Many resorts rake daily, and some beaches are more sheltered than others. This is a reason to look at conditions near your dates rather than a reason to cross out May or June.
What to pack
Cancun is a light-clothes destination all year. From December to February pack a thin long-sleeved layer or a light jacket for windy evenings, along with swimwear, linen or cotton clothes and sandals. In summer and early autumn add a light rain jacket, quick-dry shirts and shoes that can get wet. Sunscreen, a hat and reef-safe sun protection are non-negotiable in every month. For ruins, bring closed shoes, a water bottle and insect repellent.
How we picked these months
Every figure in this guide about the best time to go to Cancun comes from WeatherApex data for Cancun: 20-year monthly averages (2006 to 2025) for temperature, rainfall, rainy days, sunshine and humidity. A rainy day means a day with measurable rain, which can be a ten-minute shower or an all-day downpour, so read that column alongside total inches. Averages describe what is typical, not what will happen on your trip.
One practical step before you book: look at your dates in the WeatherApex trip planner, and compare the same week with the Cancun overview. If you are weighing Mexico against another warm-weather option, our look at the Bahamas in February shows what a Caribbean island offers in the same season.
