Best Places to Visit in October USA: 9 Cities With the Best Weather

October 19, 2026

San Diego, Los Angeles and Las Vegas each average just 2 rainy days in October, while Boston and New York trade sunshine for fall color. Here are nine US cities with real weather numbers.

The best places to visit in October USA-wide are the ones where summer heat has let go and winter has not started yet: San Diego (highs of 74.5°F / 23.6°C, 2 rainy days), Los Angeles (81.9°F / 27.7°C, 2 rainy days), Las Vegas (80.2°F / 26.8°C, 2 rainy days) and New Orleans (78.3°F / 25.7°C). If you want crisp air and changing leaves rather than sunshine, Boston and New York are the pick, with highs in the low to mid 60s F.

October is the month when the country splits in two. The west and south are at their most comfortable of the whole year, while the north is already reaching for a jacket. We would not try to cover both in one trip. Pick a direction first, then pick the city. Everything below uses 20-year averages from our own weather data, and we have kept the fall color talk qualitative because leaf timing shifts every year and we do not measure it.

Best places to visit in October USA: quick-answer table

Nine cities, sorted roughly from warmest and driest to coolest. All figures are October averages for 2006 to 2025.

Place Avg high Avg low Rain Rainy days Sun hours per day Humidity
San Diego 74.5°F (23.6°C) 59.4°F (15.2°C) 0.5 in / 13 mm 2 10.2 72%
Los Angeles 81.9°F (27.7°C) 57.9°F (14.4°C) 0.6 in / 15 mm 2 10.2 56%
Las Vegas 80.2°F (26.8°C) 58.5°F (14.7°C) 0.3 in / 8 mm 2 10.7 27%
San Francisco 69.1°F (20.6°C) 54.5°F (12.5°C) 1.1 in / 28 mm 3 9.8 74%
Austin 81.7°F (27.6°C) 62.4°F (16.9°C) 3.5 in / 89 mm 7 9.2 63%
New Orleans 78.3°F (25.7°C) 66.2°F (19.0°C) 3.3 in / 84 mm 8 9.8 73%
Denver 64.8°F (18.2°C) 37.6°F (3.1°C) 1.4 in / 36 mm 6 9.6 52%
New York 64.9°F (18.3°C) 50.5°F (10.3°C) 4.6 in / 117 mm 9 7.8 73%
Boston 62.4°F (16.9°C) 48.0°F (8.9°C) 4.3 in / 109 mm 10 7.6 75%

Two things jump out. First, the western cities are astonishingly dry: Las Vegas gets 0.3 in / 8 mm for the whole month and San Diego 0.5 in / 13 mm. Second, the east coast is not dry at all. New York's 4.6 in / 117 mm over 9 rainy days is more than double what Denver sees, so a fall color trip there still needs a rain plan.

Best Places to Visit in October USA: The Quick Answer

San Diego: the safest single answer

If someone asked us for one October city and gave no other detail, we would say San Diego. Highs reach 74.5°F / 23.6°C, lows hold at 59.4°F / 15.2°C, and it rains on just 2 days. Sun averages 10.2 hours a day. The ocean is still warm from summer, and the beach crowds have usually thinned after Labor Day. The small catch is humidity at 72%, which feels muggier than the thermometer suggests on still days. It suits couples, families with school-age kids on a long weekend, and anyone who wants a no-risk trip.

Los Angeles: warm days, cool nights

Los Angeles runs hotter than San Diego in October, with highs of 81.9°F / 27.7°C and lows near 57.9°F / 14.4°C. That 24 degree gap between day and night is worth packing for. Rain is a rare event (0.6 in / 15 mm in total) and humidity is a comfortable 56%. Beaches work, hiking works, and the theme parks are far more tolerable than in July. We would still keep an eye on the forecast for Santa Ana wind spells, which can push temperatures well above the average and bring fire risk to the hills. That is a forecast item, not something an average can show.

San Francisco: its best weather of the year

People who only know San Francisco for summer fog are often surprised by October. Highs of 69.1°F / 20.6°C are modest, but with only 3 rainy days and 9.8 hours of sun per day, it is clearer and calmer than July. Mornings can still be cold and damp near the water. This is a walking, ferry and wine-country month, not a swimsuit one. Layers solve almost everything. If you are choosing between the two big California cities for sightseeing, San Francisco is the better October bet; for beach time, go south.

Las Vegas: the desert finally behaves

This is the month Las Vegas becomes a normal place to walk around. Highs are 80.2°F / 26.8°C, which is still warm, but humidity is a bone-dry 27% and there are about 10.7 hours of sun a day. Nights drop to 58.5°F / 14.7°C, so pool afternoons and outdoor dinners both work. The downside is that big conventions can fill hotels in some weeks, so check dates early. For a day trip to the red rock canyons nearby, October is also the sweet spot. Our packing note for the city is in our what to wear in Vegas guide.

The South: warm, humid, and mostly settled

Austin: patio weather

Austin averages 81.7°F / 27.6°C in October with lows of 62.4°F / 16.9°C, only 7 rainy days, and humidity easing to 63%. After a Texas summer, that feels like a gift. Live music venues open their patios, river paths fill up, and you can plan a full day outside without scheduling around the afternoon heat. We would warn that one heavy front can still dump a month of rain in a night, so keep an indoor backup for the big plan of the day.

New Orleans: still warm, much less sticky

New Orleans drops from its summer swamp to 78.3°F / 25.7°C highs and 66.2°F / 19.0°C lows, with 8 rainy days. It is humid (73%) but no longer oppressive, and walking the French Quarter and the Garden District is far more pleasant than in August. Hurricane season technically runs to November 30, and October storms in the Gulf are not unheard of, so book flexible rates and look at the tropics outlook before you commit. Food and music are the draw here, not the weather, and October is the month when weather finally stops getting in the way.

The cool north: leaves, layers and honest rain

These three are not the warmest of the best places to visit in October USA lists, but they are the ones people picture when they imagine the month.

Denver: bright days, cold mornings

Denver is the sunny one of the cool group. Highs of 64.8°F / 18.2°C come with only 6 rainy days and 9.6 hours of daily sun. The catch is the low: 37.6°F / 3.1°C means frost on some mornings and a 27 degree swing from morning to afternoon. Aspens in the nearby mountains usually turn gold around the end of September into early October, and the high country can see its first snow before the month ends, so check road conditions if you plan a drive up. Best for hikers and road trippers who like cold, clear air.

New York: the classic October city break

New York has highs of 64.9°F / 18.3°C and lows of 50.5°F / 10.3°C, which is exactly the temperature range that makes walking all day enjoyable. Central Park turns color usually in the second half of the month, not the first. The cost is moisture: 9 rainy days, 4.6 in / 117 mm of rain, and only 7.8 hours of sun a day. We would plan museum days around the wet ones and pack a compact umbrella. Humidity is 73%, high for a cool month, which makes it feel damp rather than crisp when the cloud rolls in. Best for first-time visitors who care more about atmosphere than guaranteed blue skies.

Boston: for people who want it properly autumnal

Boston is a few degrees cooler than New York, with highs of 62.4°F / 16.9°C and lows of 48.0°F / 8.9°C. It has 10 rainy days and just 7.6 sunshine hours a day, so the typical October afternoon is overcast. That sounds grim on paper, but brick streets, the harbor and the Charles River in the cold light suit the season. Leaf color in New England usually peaks earlier in northern areas and arrives in the city later in the month, so a day trip out of town in the first half of October is a smart way to catch more color. Pack gloves for evenings.

Where we would not go in October

  • Miami and Key West. October is still deep in the wet season tail. Miami logs 16 rainy days and 5.0 in / 127 mm of rain (against 8 rainy days in January), while Key West logs 14 rainy days. The air stays at 76% humidity and the Atlantic hurricane season is still active until November 30. It is warm, but not our pick when this many other places are sunnier.
  • Seattle and Portland. The rainy season restarts. Seattle has 14 rainy days and only 6.7 hours of sun a day. Pretty in places, but a gray choice for a short trip.
  • Anchorage. Highs are 41.7°F / 5.4°C and daily sun falls to 5.2 hours. The northern lights season is beginning, but this is not a comfortable sightseeing month for most visitors.

How to choose by goal

The best places to visit in October USA depend heavily on what you want from the trip, because the same month gives sun and shorts in one city and wool and rain in another.

  • Guaranteed dry weather: Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Diego (2 rainy days each).
  • Beach time: San Diego or Los Angeles. Water temperature is not in our dataset, so check local sea temperatures, but the air is warm enough.
  • Fall colors: Boston or New York, ideally with a day trip inland or north.
  • Walking a big city: New York, Boston and San Francisco all sit between 62 and 69°F, a very good range for it.
  • Food, music and nightlife: New Orleans and Austin.
  • Families: San Diego and Los Angeles for reliable weather; both avoid the school-holiday peak.
  • Cheapest: prices are not in our data, so we cannot rank by cost. As a rule, beach cities tend to be easier on the wallet once summer holidays are over, but check dates against local events and conventions before booking.

If you are open to a different mix, our companion guide on good places to visit in October in USA sorts a different set of cities by goal instead of by weather quality.

What to pack

The mistake we see in advice for this month is a single packing list for the whole country. It does not work. A better rule: pack for the temperature range of the city, not the month. In the Southwest and California, bring light layers and a jacket for evenings, since lows run from 59.4°F / 15.2°C in San Diego to 58.5°F / 14.7°C in Las Vegas. In the South, bring breathable cotton and a light rain shell. In New York and Boston, bring a mid-weight coat, an umbrella and shoes that handle wet pavement. For Denver, bring a warm hat and gloves for the morning. Our guide to what to wear in 60 degree weather covers the in-between days.

How we picked and what the numbers mean

We used 20-year October averages from 2006 to 2025 for 25 U.S. cities in our dataset and shortlisted the nine best places to visit in October USA that combine comfortable temperatures with low rain and decent sun. These figures describe a typical October, not a forecast, and any single year can be warmer, wetter or stormier. Fall color is not measured in our data, so the leaf comments are general patterns only. To see the day-by-day shape of a month you can open any city page, for example the New York or San Diego pages, or try our trip planner to compare dates side by side. Whatever you choose, book a flexible fare for the southern coast cities in particular, because tropical weather is a small but real risk until the end of November.
