Best Places to Visit in July: Beaches and Cool Escapes by the Numbers

October 17, 2026

Lisbon, Nice, Honolulu and San Diego give you beach weather with highs between 75.7 and 82.4°F, while Vancouver and Stockholm stay near 71 to 72°F. We compared 20 years of July data to pick ten places and flag the ones to skip.

The best places to visit in July are the ones where summer stays warm without turning punishing: Lisbon (highs near 80.4°F and a single rainy day all month), Nice (82.2°F), Honolulu (82.4°F) and San Diego (75.7°F) for beaches, then Vancouver, Stockholm and Helsinki if you would rather wear a light jacket than hunt for shade. All of them sit between 70 and 83°F on a typical July afternoon, and none of them is in the middle of a monsoon.

That matters because July is the month where the world splits hardest. Phoenix averages 105.6°F (40.9°C) and Dubai 109.0°F (42.8°C), while Mumbai collects 28.9 in (734 mm) of rain over 31 rainy days. Northern summer holidays push everyone toward the same few coasts, so the trick is picking a place with good weather and a manageable crowd, not simply the famous one. We worked from 20 years of WeatherApex averages to build the list below.

Best places to visit in July at a glance

Ten places, sorted roughly from beach weather to cool-summer weather. Temperatures are shown in Fahrenheit with Celsius in brackets, and rain is the monthly total in inches with millimetres in brackets.

Pebble beach and curved seafront promenade in Nice on a clear July day.

Read the sun column alongside the rain column. Lisbon, Nice and Istanbul all get more than 13 hours of sun per day on average, which is why they feel so reliably summery even when the thermometer is not extreme.

Best places to visit in July for a beach or coast day

Not every sea is equal in July. Warm air and warm water are two different things, and only one of them shows up in a forecast. Here is how the five coastal options really compare.

Honolulu

Honolulu is the most dependable beach in this list because it barely changes. The average high is 82.4°F (28.0°C), the low 74.8°F (23.8°C), and the rain is a passing shower: 0.9 in (23 mm) spread over 7 days. Trade winds usually take the edge off the humidity (72%), though you will still feel it in the afternoon. The catch is that July is a busy month for families, so book flights and rooms early.

San Diego

San Diego is the one for people who want a beach without sweating through it. Highs reach 75.7°F (24.3°C), nights hold at 64.0°F (17.8°C), and the whole month brings 0.1 in (3 mm) of rain. The Pacific is cooler than you would expect from the air temperature, and mornings can start grey near the water before the sun burns through. It suits families and anyone who dislikes humidity; at 78% it is damp but never heavy.

Barcelona

Barcelona gives you a real city and a real beach in the same afternoon, which no other place here manages. Highs average 82.6°F (28.1°C), and the nights are warm at 69.8°F (21.0°C), so sleeping without air conditioning is a gamble. Rain is rare (5 days), but humidity sits at 72% and the old streets get crowded. We would plan museums and walking for the morning and be at the sea by early afternoon.

Nice

Nice has the best sun record of any coast on this page: 14.1 hours per day, with only 5 rainy days and 0.8 in (20 mm) of rain. Highs reach 82.2°F (27.9°C). The beach there is mostly pebbles, so bring sandals for the walk into the water. Be honest with yourself about money and crowds, because July and August are the peak of the Riviera season and it feels like it. If that sounds like too much, the same coastline is calmer a month earlier or later.

Lisbon

Lisbon is where we would send someone who wants heat without drama. It averages 80.4°F (26.9°C) with a low of 64.6°F (18.1°C), so evenings cool down enough for a proper dinner outside, and rainfall is 0.1 in (3 mm) for the month. The hills are steep and the afternoon sun is strong, so pace yourself. The Atlantic beaches near the city are lovely but the water is cold, closer to a quick dip than a long swim. A city pick with sea views

Istanbul

Istanbul is warm but manageable: 83.5°F (28.6°C) on average, 69.8°F (21.0°C) overnight, and only 4 rainy days. It is a sightseeing destination first, so think mosques, ferries and long dinners, not sunbathing. Humidity at 70% is noticeable in the narrow streets, and the famous sights are busy by mid-morning. Go early, take the ferry in the evening, and the heat becomes pleasant.

Cool-summer escapes

If beach weather is not the goal, July is the best month of the year for the north. The days are long and the temperatures are friendly.

Vancouver

Vancouver sits at 72.5°F (22.5°C) for the average high and 58.6°F (14.8°C) for the low, with just 5 rainy days and 13.4 hours of sun per day. That is close to ideal for hiking, cycling the seawall and day trips into the mountains. The ocean stays cold, and in some summers wildfire smoke drifts in from elsewhere in the region, so keep your plans a little flexible.

Stockholm and Helsinki

These two make a natural pair. Stockholm averages 71.1°F (21.7°C) and Helsinki 70.0°F (21.1°C), both with around 13.6 hours of daily sun, and both are far kinder in July than the hot south. Expect 12 rainy days in Stockholm and 12 in Helsinki, usually short showers. Evenings stay light for a very long time, so the day feels roomy. Water temperatures are fine for a quick swim from the archipelago islands, but do not count on warm sea.

Reykjavik

Reykjavik is not a beach trip and does not pretend to be. The average high is 57.4°F (14.1°C), the low 48.0°F (8.9°C), and it rains on 15 days. You come for the landscapes, the long light and the road trips, and you pack a windproof layer. It is the coolest place on our list and the one most likely to surprise you with all four seasons in a day. More detail is in the best time to visit Iceland.

Near misses worth knowing about

A few places nearly made the table. Porto is a quieter cousin of Lisbon at 77.0°F (25.0°C), with 4 rainy days and a bit more Atlantic haze at 75% humidity. Seattle has one of the driest Julys of any big US city, with 0.7 in (18 mm) of rain and 75.9°F (24.4°C) highs, but Vancouver gives you a similar climate with a bigger mountain-and-sea setting. Copenhagen (69.8°F (21.0°C), 13 rainy days) and Oslo (70.9°F (21.6°C), 14 rainy days) are pleasant but wetter than Stockholm and Helsinki. And Bergen is the cautionary tale: 6.8 in (173 mm) of rain and 18 rainy days make it one of the wettest places in Norway even in midsummer.

Early July, late July

The averages hide a slope. Early July often feels like late June in the north, with the longest evenings and the first big crowds, while late July is the point where Mediterranean heat is at its most settled. If you have flexibility, we would pick the second half of the month for Honolulu and San Diego (nothing changes much), the first half for Barcelona, Nice and Istanbul (a little less heat, a little less queueing), and any week at all for Vancouver, Stockholm and Helsinki. Reykjavik is the one to book early, since accommodation fills up fast in summer.

Where we would not go in July

Everything above is the opposite of the places below. This is a list of regions where July is the wrong month, not the wrong destination.

  • Phoenix, Las Vegas, Dubai and Cairo. Average highs are 105.6, 103.8, 109.0 and 99.7°F. Dubai also keeps lows near 85.3°F, so there is little relief at night. Fine for a hotel pool, poor for walking around.
  • Mumbai, Kolkata and Manila. This is monsoon and wet-season territory: Mumbai logs 31 rainy days, Kolkata 29 and Manila 28, with Manila's 14.4 in (366 mm) of rain doing most of the damage.
  • Orlando, Miami and Cancun. Hot, humid and stormy. Orlando has 23 rainy days and 81% humidity, Miami 22 rainy days, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.
  • Mexico City. It rains on 25 days in July, usually in the afternoon. Not a washout, but not the trip most people picture.
  • Southern hemisphere cities. Seasons are reversed, so July is winter in Sydney (61.5°F (16.4°C)) and Melbourne (55.6°F (13.1°C)). Lovely in their own way, just not a summer holiday.

How to choose among the best places to visit in July, by goal

  • Swimming and sand: Honolulu first, Barcelona and Nice second. San Diego if you prefer dry air to warm water.
  • Staying cool while sightseeing: Vancouver, Stockholm and Helsinki all stay under 73°F on average.
  • Families: San Diego and Honolulu are the easiest, with short transfers and predictable days.
  • Fewer crowds: Helsinki and Stockholm are generally calmer than the Riviera or Barcelona. Reykjavik is popular, but the landscapes spread the visitors out.
  • Value: We do not track prices, but Lisbon and Istanbul tend to cost less than Nice for similar weather. Check current fares before you commit.

If your dates are fixed and your destination is not, our trip planner can help you match a week to a climate. And if heat and monsoon are your main worry, our separate piece on avoiding extreme heat and rain in July covers a different set of cities.

What to pack

For the beach picks, think light cotton or linen, a hat, reef-safe sunscreen and sandals you can walk in. For Lisbon and Barcelona add a thin layer for breezy evenings. For Vancouver, Stockholm, Helsinki and Reykjavik, pack in layers: a light waterproof jacket, a sweater, and a pair of trousers you can wear all day. If you are unsure what a given temperature feels like, remember that 80°F with humidity feels very different from 80°F in dry air.

How we picked, and a note on the data

We started with the WeatherApex dataset of 20-year monthly averages from 2006 to 2025 and looked at July in every city it covers. We kept places with highs between roughly 57 and 88°F, fewer than about 18 rainy days, and enough sun to feel like summer. We then balanced the list so it included beaches, cities and cool escapes. Those figures are typical conditions, and a list of the best places to visit in July on paper can still surprise you on the day. They are not a forecast, so any single July can run hotter, wetter or cooler. Treat the table as a shortlist. Expect a few degrees of wiggle room and check the forecast about a week out. The weather figures come from the Open-Meteo archive.

Frequently asked questions

For dry, sunny weather without extreme heat, Lisbon (80.4°F, 1 rainy day), Nice (82.2°F, 14.1 sun hours per day) and San Diego (75.7°F, 1 rainy day) are hard to beat. If you prefer cooler days, Vancouver averages 72.5°F with 5 rainy days. These are 20-year averages, so treat them as typical, not guaranteed.

What is the best beach destination in July?

Honolulu is the most reliable, with an average high of 82.4°F, a low of 74.8°F and only 0.9 inches of rain. Barcelona and Nice are good alternatives in Europe, with highs around 82°F and 5 rainy days each. Expect crowds in all three.
